City of Seattle Passes Do Not Mail Resolution

Today the City of Seattle passed a non-binding resolution asking the State of Washington to set up a do not mail registry and directing the Seattle Public Utilities agency to evaluate the existing mail preference services as an option to provide an effective service to Seattle residents.  This second part of the resolution is in direct response to feedback from the industry.  As the largest independent voluntary mail preference solution, we welcome the opportunity to inform the City about what it takes to run an effective voluntary service.

You can view the Council’s discussion on the topic by viewing this video of the City Council meeting.  Click Resolution 31169 from the right hand side index or fast forward to 46:50 of the video.

My husband is a letter carrier and I personally enjoy looking and sharing my catalogs and magazines I get through the mail. I send my old magazines to the troops in Iraq and Afganastain. I feel bad when I go to the mailbox and there is nothing there. I feel much better when I open the mailbox and there are lots and lots of catalogs to look through. I appreciate all the time everyone takes to photograph and detail all the products they promote.

Tara – We agree that you should have the right to choose what gets in your mailbox. If you enjoy getting catalogs and other ad mail, then you can continue to do so. There is nothing in the Seattle resolution or any other effort that will stop you from getting the mail you want.
