Is your friend the millionth member?

We are getting very close to the magical million member milestone.  Yvonne, we don’t have any big celebrations planned at the moment. We are busy working on a new and improved version of Catalog Choice and we don’t have time to take our eye off the ball right now.  Stay tuned for Catalog Choice 2.0 in the coming weeks.

We do plan on celebrating the millionth member with a guest appearance on the blog, if that person so chooses.  We don’t have any fancy systems to identify the millionth member as they click the sign up button.  Once we see the real-time member counter always present on the home page ring up the 7th digit, we will figure out who the lucky member is.

What continues to inspire us is how fast we reached a million members.  But it is not a mystery - it is due to lots of hard work by everyone involved.

  1. It is our easy to use solution designed by our killer development team.
  2. It is a result of hard work by our partner organizations, NWF, NRDC and Ecology Center, who have help spread the word to the media.
  3. It is a thanks to so many of our members who used our Invite a Friend feature to invite over 435,000 friends.
  4. It is thanks to our dedicated readers of the blog who jump into the comment section to answer questions and clarify the facts about the confusing process of honoring mail preference requests.
  5. It is the power of social media and citizen bloggers that has helped spread the word to so many Americans and driven our natural search result to the #2 spot on Google’s list.
  6. It is because hundreds of merchants have been open to accepting our mail preference requests in a secure and automated fashion. I know the “Bravo Merchants” will appreciate your support this holiday season.
  7. Most of all, it is because no one wants to waste time, money or natural resources; and that is what Catalog Choice aims to accomplish for consumers, merchants and the environment.

We know we have hard work ahead of us to get more merchants to honor the requests entered through Catalog Choice.  Catalog Choice is far from perfect.

I know you wonder every time you receive a catalog in the mail that you have already opted-out of on our site - is it worth the effort?  The answer is yes - it is worth the effort - because it is the easier for everyone to use a service like ours than pick up the phone and call customer service.  So when you pick up that unwanted catalog, drop it in the recycling bin, rest assured that we will not stop working on behalf of every member, every merchant and every sponsor to make our mail preference service the best in the nation.

  1. Kudos to you for encouraging so many people to get a little greener by cancelling unwanted catalogs and for making it much easier to do so. Regarding your efforts to spread the word, have you considered working with people at the relatively new Planet Green channel. On their shows (several of which I really like) I have noticed two recent mentions of how beneficial for the environment it is to cancel unwanted catalogs, but they suggested calling each one to cancel. I wondered if they knew about your web site, whichs it so much easier and quicker to cancel for people who receive many catalogs - like most people I know these days.
Best wishes for your continued success.

  2. It seems like the catalogs I opt out of just assign me a new customer number in order to keep sending them. I have like 5-6 from one company (Chasing Fireflies). It seems like this is a way that sellers are appearing to respect my choices but really are not. Are other folks experiencing this?

  3. Lisa - YES!!! Chasing Fireflies is the worst when it comes to just assigning new customer numbers. To top that off, I got one today from “Wishcraft” by Chasing Fireflies. This company isn’t even on the list to decline from. And, after all that, I don’t even have kids. My other top offender is DELL corp. They have lost my business forever, regardless of what I think of their computers.

  4. Lisa - I have quite a few catalogs that just keep assigning new customer numbers. Pretty sleazy, I think. I wonder if there is anything we can do to call them on it???

  5. Lisa - yes - this is happening to me too and I’m not happy about it. I have opted out “again” here but I plan on calling to give these merchants a piece of my mind today - Happy Friday! Is there anything legally we can do to stop this? In a way, I find it offensive to my choices and privacy. (the two are: The Vermont Country Store & Woman Within - never ordered from them to begin with).

  6. Ann, I’m a bit surprised about Vermont Country Store because they have been very respectful of my wishes.
FYI: Woman Within is under the Redcats USA family of several catalogs. To name a few: Brylane, Chadwicks, Cyrillus, Jessica London, oh, I could go on… Try contacting Redcats USA PO Box 4400 Taunton, MA 02780-7359. They were kind enough to remove me from all of their mailings and respond. It does take a few months.
Sometimes I get flyers for Dell Corp but the culprits are probably the big electronic appliance stores we buy dvds from even though they deny sharing mail info. We haven’t received any catalogs from Dell since Mar08 and they are a “Confirmed” on my list.
I also would like to know if CC.org would be joining the Green Channel family. I love their shows and innovative ideas.

  7. Three arrived today Yvonne:

Opted out several times to “Woman Within” and now they have me on Jessica London’s hit-list - Ironically I received two of the Woman Within catalog’s today - one’s a Roman but has same customer number as Woman Within - Our planet will never be GREEN! Makes me want to YELL YELL YELL - oh yes, and I have phoned at least three times to request they NOT send me any more catalogs! UNCLE!

I wonder if calling each of these individually will help or not - opting out here doesn’t seem to make it with this family of catlogs (Woman Within, Roman’s, Jessica Landon). Very fed up with this whole thing. Husband laughed his butt off when he brought in the three catalogs today (frown). HELP!

  8. A: I’ve called the individual catalogs but unless they’ve changed, writing to the head of the family worked. I did a lot of googling to find a few of the major culprits but I think with CC.org many are now really listening. Junk mailings from those financial ex empires that are affecting our economy (not CC.org’s job) have been my headache. I may need a job soon because of that mess.

  9. The worst offenders in my mailbox are Metrostyle and BrylaneHome. They will not get the message…even though I have opted out AND called..don’t these businesses realize I’m less inclined to do business with them because they refuse to regard my wishes????
